Neustadt, Ontario - Saturday May 15th 2010

Now that it is too hot to be outside and almost too hot to do anything inside but sit, I shall blog. Where to start though – the beginning and work forward? Today and work backwards? Decisions, decisions decisions. OK I lost the coin toss and shall start at the beginning of the season and work towards today.
Our first official tour of the season was to Neustadt, Ontario on Saturday May 15th. As we met at the Tim Horton’s in Orangeville, Jim Campbell stated “we got to stop touring in the middle of winter” truer words were never spoken.
Everyone was there on time including Andrew and Tiff, who trailered all the way from London to our starting point then joined the crowd. We had a great drive along some wonderful scenic roads and met up with the “Northern Group” in Dundalk at Just In Time, where everyone was happy to get inside and warmed up with coffee or hot chocolate.
On to Neustadt. Neustadt claims to be one of “Canada’s prettiest towns” and was voted by Harrowsmith Magazine in 2000 as one of Canada’s 10 prettiest towns. Not bad for a town with the population of 300 (I think the cows outnumber the people). The town was founded in 1855 by a German Settler named David Winkler and Neustadt in German means “new town”.
As if this is not enough fame for a small village in rural Ontario, it is also the birthplace of Canada’s 13th Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker. .... but enough of that, our main reason for taking the tour to Neustadt was to visit the Neustadt Springs Brewery http://www.neustadtsprings.com/ This small craft brewery was established in Neustadt in 1859 and was built over the finest Spring Waters in Canada and is also the oldest operating brewery in Ontario.
When we arrived in Neustadt some members of the Southern Chapter of Model A Owners of Canada were already waiting in the brewery to greet us bring the total number of cars to 23. We along with a few others did not go on the tour of the brewery as the numbers were so large they already had to split into two groups. Chat around the lunch table though was that everyone really enjoyed the tour, especially going down into the caves and seeing the spring and learning the history. You can read all about it on the website under the history link.
While the others toured and taste tested the beer some of us took advantage of the time and went to the antique and craft stores around town. No great finds for us, but I believe Don and Anne found something worth tossing in the rumble seat.
Once the tours were finished we gathered at Noah’s Inn in town for a lovely lunch. http://www.noahsinn.ca/ Hot soup was greatly welcomed by me anyway (why do we have an open car again?) The atmosphere was great, the food very tasty and the company fantastic. The proprietor Bryan came out and gave everyone a lovely welcome and a brief history of the Inn which you can read about http://www.noahsinn.ca/who.php he got a big .. Awwwwwwww when he mentioned that he re-named the Inn after his grandfather Noah.
It actually had warmed up a tiny little bit by the time we finished lunch. Most of the group headed off while some of our group stuck around to do some antiquing before heading home. On the way home, debating where to stop off for a quick break Gloria and Willy asked if we would like to stop in at their place in Flesherton and we did. Willy and Gloria have a lovely home and according to the guys an even nicer garage  I think they all walked away wishing it was there. Thank you Willy and Gloria for your hospitality.
A great day had by all. To view photo’s look under photo link or visit http://picasaweb.google.ca/Glenn40B/NeustadtHuroniaWireWheelChapterTour#
